The thing about shmups is they all look cool as fuck compared to pretty much everything else from every other genre. Space ships, robots, helicopters, tanks, motorcycles, motherships, mechs, tanks, battleships, aliens, monsters, planets, galaxies, portals, bright colors, bold lines, a billion different kinds of lasers/energy shots/bombs, etc etc etc. It's all just a bunch of cool shit. Minimal or no gay elf, nor boring contemporary stuff, just a bunch of awesome stuff.
