I didn't play Goldeneye until AFTER I've played my fair share of Quake, Doom, Unreal/Tournament, Halo, Half Life, Team Fortress, and just about any other FPS worth a damn.
I enjoyed it immensely because it was a breath of fresh air from everything else. It's like its own little subgenre of free-roaming on-rails shooting... If that makes any sense.

If you want a more accessible version of Goldeneye, play Timesplitters 2 or 3. They were released on 6th gen consoles, and play more or less how you'd expect a 6th gen console shooter to play.
