Go read the Ackman manga, they're short.
The Ackman games are just 2D platformers, you will miss some funny comments here and there, but won't really get in your way of having fun.
Ackman 1 and 2 are also great, but 3 is excellent.

Anyway, have fun with Mitsume ga tooru, great game.
