Took a look at that and yeah, I guess they were left out of the European releases. On a related note, considering how 2 and especially 3 (given that that one had the time issue of being released while the "Year of the Dragon" subtitle would still hold meaning by releasing in the proper year) were a bit rushed, it's surprising just how well they turned out even then. Insomniac may have been short on time but knew how to put forth the effort to make a game good even in spite of that, and it certainly helps the trilogy still hold up quite well even now.

Well, good luck with that. Working with InDesign or some other layout program can be fun when you get the hang of it, but for something that big, I hope you don't have to write all the actual content yourself (since that sounds like it would take forever given that many pages), and can create templates for the actual page styles.

Odd. The copies of the third game I've had have never wound up malfunctioning like that, at least that I can recall. Do you remember the particular level? The third game was admittedly kind of buggy at times (notoriously the music for the final boss not being used in the original version) due to being rushed to still come out in 2000 to keep the real world meaning "Year of the Dragon" had.

At least Hero's Tail was playable without constantly having to load all the damn time. Still nowhere near as good as the original three.

I'd say it tried to do a bit too much and as such suffers a bit for it, but that by no means makes it a bad game. Kind of like Crash Bandicoot Warped in that aspect.

I generally prefer active. Overall the active setting seems to work pretty good, and they do give you free camera control when not moving, so it's not like it restricts your freedom. You can also change the setting at any time in the options menu, as I recall.
