/vr/ - Retro Games

Nice thing about a hacked Wii is the VC/WiiWare/GC/Wii support. No janky freetard stuff. There are several retro collections that were released on the GameCube, like Namco 50th Anniversary, classic Mega Man / Mega Man X, Sonic, etc. And because of Nintendo's file size limitation on WiiWare, there's a lot of retro inspired titles: Konami's Rebirth series, a new BurgerTime and Bubble Bobble, and so on. Even if you just take the step of installing HBC and a few loaders, it's still 10/10. I also highly recommend WiiMC, a versatile multimedia player; it does shoutcast, movies--just about everything. The streaming channels are a bit slow, but functional. Makes for a nice backup TV setup if you've got a lot of people in your house.

So basically adventure platformers that came out before SotN.

Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night represent a turning point in adventure platformers, so much so that the genre became known as "metroidvania" from that point on and yes, SoTN and other Igavanias are more casualized than Super Metroid. You'll get more polished streamlined experiences if you follow the genre forward from the midpoint you discovered, more primitive punishing experiences if you follow it backward.
