>NES RPGs are skinny and short as hell compared to anything post-cartridge era.

Digital Devil Story - Megami Tensei II took me around 80 hours to beat.

I didn't even get the best ending.

I have played many Famicom RPGs and on average they take me 20-40 hours. Which is the same length as Final Fantasy VII.

Digital Devil Story - Megami Tensei II

Another one of the bests RPGs on the system if you're looking for something a little more mature. Based on recruiting demons to add to your party and exploring faux 3D dungeons. Tons of content, easily took me 60-80 hours to complete. Highly recommended to draw your own maps for dungeons unless you have extremely good memory and sense of direction.

I did it at last, beat this game. I can't believe how much content this game has, Famicom jRPGs usually last me 30-35 hours at most, I have no idea how long this took me but probably between 60 and 100 hours.

Starting from Ginza I mapped out every dungeon myself so there is that, though it took time it often saved me time as well I believe.

Great musics with that kick ass Namco chip, great graphics, challenging gameplay (though from the mid game onward you should find ways to break the game), tons of content and a gameplay system that offers tons of freedom for customization with all the demons you can recruit, and which rewards experimentation.

The only real downside was how repetitive some of the dungeons got, and in terms of faux-3D I've seen far better on Famicom/NES.

Not really something I'd recommend to a first timer like OP, but if he can play that without too much reliance on guides, he can probably play any console jRPG
