The gameplay had some neat ideas even if they were questionably executed. It's mostly a fairly competent JRPG with a very unique setting and one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I also loved how the dialogue felt like some kind of stage play and the characters would do little flourishes while talking. I'm surprised nobody seems to be working on translating it, far less interesting games have been translated.

Eh, depends what you want in a game. I played it all the way through a few months ago.

Pros:
>10/10 atmosphere
>10/10 soundtrack
>10/10 setting
>10/10 art, visuals in general are very comfy, though the character models are pretty crappy
>Pretty good writing
>Combat system where you learn new combos is interesting, similar to SaGa in some ways, and the way move speed/turn order works is quite unique among JRPGs
>Generally doesn't require any grinding

Cons:
>Overworld controls SUCK
>Slow, like most PS1 JRPGs. Muh loading times.
>Story has a few parts that feel rushed or underexplained, ie. Martha in general
>You need to know exactly what moves unlock what combos, and even then it's RNG whether you'll get them or not. A guide is mandatory if you want to learn the more powerful moves.
>Has a nasty few difficulty spikes early on

>as this game is mostly an adaptation.
Nah I don't think so. I haven't watched the anime but I've glanced over it and it seems to only share a few setting elements like mermaids and merlions. The game appears to be an original story in a similar universe.

If you're gonna play it there's one tip I feel like I should give: find a guide for the special moves.
This game has a sparking system similar to SaGa but it gets incredibly specific with what you have to do to unlock new moves, to the point you'll barely unlock anything past the early game if you don't have a guide for it.

I beat it a few days ago. What part of the battle system don't you understand? I had a pretty solid grasp by the end so I should be able to help.

I strongly recommend using this guide to tell what weapons spark what combos and special attacks, it's a total shitshow trying to figure it out yourself because it's totally arbitrary: http://www9.wind.ne.jp/venom/game/meremanoid/arts.html
