Turning my goof girl into a Sage and imagining the priestess was jealous of her was fun, but for me the best thing about DQIII was the whole traveling around the world and figuring out what to do on my own without any guide whatsoever. Once you get Ramia to fly around the world freely it feels amazing.

It was, DQ 1 and 2 were already popular, but III made it big scale, the map is bigger and is an actual world you can explore in all directions, and has customizable party members, and an incredible climax at the end that ties to the first DQ.
It deserves its praise and even though I played it recently, I can only imagine how mind blowing many things about this game were at the time of release.
It doesn't have to do with graphics or impressive effects but more about game design.
