Simplicity has its charm too. Not every JRPG needs a convoluted plot about teenagers killing god.

Are you sure? DQ I-III are cart games so they don't have any loading time, for one. Then, menu browsing is rather fast, and since the battles don't really have any animations, they're also pretty quick. Older RPGs are actually faster then newer ones, or the ones that included longer attack animations cutscenes on the CD era.

It's sad how Dragon Quest brings a lot of /v/ console warring.
Just play the NES originals, and if you like them, play the SNES remakes when you decide to do a replay.

As you can see on the pic I posted, I put Warrior on front, he's just STRONK. Then hero, then female sage and female priest.
Female sage was originally goof girl, I didn't really make up any backstory but basically the priest girl is very jealous of the goof turned sage girl.
I like your idea of the wizard turning into a young sage, reminds me of Dohko of Libra from Saint Seiya.
