I didn't have NBA Jam... but grew up with Arch Rivals on my Mega Drive, which is sort of a lite predecessor to it, and I loved it... still do really, fire it up from time to time, how different is it from NBA Jam? What were the core changes, I never gave NBA Jam a serious shot to be fair...

No opening sequence captures the essence of football quite like Pro Evolution Soccer 3... it's truly fantastic, even today most openings are just about the top players doing plays and the goals they're famous for, lifting trophies, etc... but THIS... this right here is what football's all about to most people out there, supporting a bunch of clubs that don't win much, I love this.

>I have an irrational hatred of RetroArch.
I feel like this sums up a lot of the thread, RetroArch just works well for a lot of people, it sets out to do something simple, keeping it all in one place with universal settings if needed, and it succeeds, and for those that don't want that, then downloading standalone emulators is still the option for them. I'll never get the hatred RetroArch gets...

It's not because I dislike sports video games, if it was then I'd include all of them, I'm going for this specific one because I do love football and video games based on it, mostly Konami ones... but I do enjoy later FIFA titles, the series really picked up after FIFA 98 and especially FIFA 08, but that's no longer retro... anyways, I often heard about how praised FIFA on Genesis was, the early titles, all the way up until the FIFA 98 port, so 5 titles, with SNES ports too... and they're a pain to play... I'm aware that most football video games from that era weren't good, but here I can barely string any passes together and make proper plays, it's such an ugly match of football every time, all the CPU does is attempt shooting from outside the box, which seems to be the best strategy, but this is hoofball at its ugliest and least fun, players feel too heavy and too light at the same time, and passing's awful, the controls don't feel good at all, all if had going for it was the isometric view, which I don't even find that appealing. TECMO World Cup's still my favorite football video game from that era and this doesn't even come close to it, at least for me, I'd rather play World Cup Italia '90 on Genesis, or even the Master System version, it's a lot more fun and I make more proper plays because controls feel better to me.

I mean, you can call sports video game fans all of the degrading adjectives you want, it's still a fact that sports video games have been around since, well, video games. As early as the late 50's, with Tennis-For-Two, we had people trying to replicate their favorite sports into video games, and then Pong became a huge hit, and it was all about you getting a ball past your opponent to make your score go up, just like most ball sports out there. I know you dislike them, but they're not trash...

If you look at the video game industry as a whole it's common to see other types of games, board games and card games mainly, being turned into video games, and what is a sport? It's a game too, so it's understandable why they exist... and why do people play them? Well, if you're a sports fan, it's not always viable to play outside with people, and sometimes you want something more deep or RPG like, playing a whole career, being a coach and stuff, they're wonderful for that, I love them.

>/vr/ unpopular opinions
I don't get the hate for sports simulators at all, I mean, video games pretty much started out with people trying to recreate sports digitally, look at Pong or Tennis For Two, for example, even in the Atari 2600, or other consoles before the NES, we had tons of sports titles, and many people that loved them. I mean, what even is a sport? That's right, it's a game, it's something you play, taking other types of games and making video games out of them is nothing new, card game and board game fans know what I'm talking about. I often see people claim that nothing changes between them, which might be true for EA titles today in their monopolies, but back then? All of them felt so different and it was fun playing a bunch of them to see what you liked most, sports aren't so simple, so a video game based on one can play quite differently from other ones based on the very same sport, especially as the years went by and technology improved. Also, I disagree with the whole "you can just play outside" argument, afterall that can go for other video games in a similar manner, and the reason it doesn't is very simple, video games naturally gives us options that real life doesn't. I try to play with a group of friends from my college days every once in a while, we love playing football/soccer, but it's not always possible to get a bunch of people at the same time and place to play, also, while I can play with friends, a video game allows me to become a player for huge clubs, for my national team, become a manager, etc.
