>beat half the stage, suddenly the screen darkens and I get the level password, like I've just beaten the level

>go to a Armored Armadillo stage to fill up the energy tanks
>shoot those bats until they drop health
>every health up item they drop vanishes the moment it touches the ground
>wtf
>end the level
>go back to the intro level on the highway
>no suit upgrades, only health
>beat the stage
>all upgrades gone
>google it
>turns out I had a bad dump of the game that I must have downloaded years ago
at least I could just enter my password with a different ROM and just continue from where I left, thanks to the Password System™
