So I got BlueMSX running via the new RetroArch GUI. It seems that libretro won't recognize any game files (no matter the extension, .dsk in the case of MSX disk games) that aren't in the ROM and CAS databases the emulator provides and which the core refers to. Yuureikun, for example, has both a cartridge and disk release: the former plays cycle-perfect just like with an untethered BlueMSX set-up, but there's no way I know of to get it to recognize the latter. Hopefully I'm speaking out my ass, hopefully one could get a disk game running using the command line instead. Until then my recommendation is to use BlueMSX/OpenMSX outside libretro, which is fine as they both come with machines BIOSes pre-installed or downloadable. I don't know if there are hashes generated for MSX disk games that one could use to build a database libretro would recognize.

On another note, Euphory is fun once you get used to controls and the menu system. The save I have starts me with armor + bow, which isn't a blank-slate start given that you have to buy those items first; chicken legs and money you have to get from enemies, and there's enough room to grind while getting other things done, the world's pretty big in scale at least.
