Yes, but the later ones aren't bad - Its just they all have issues or shortcomings SS doesn't:

SS never overstays its welcome, its incredibly dense while constantly bombarding you with new locations and characters
Combat is incredibly fast and snappy, there are no inflated enemy HP sponges, basically all bros attacks come out immeadiately (As opposed to later games which turned these into what felt like long minigames every time and it got really dull)
It wraps up in less than 15 hours while still offering plenty of shit off the beaten path to explore
Soundtrack and presentation is top tier
I love the fish out of water comedy
I love how there's no mouthpiece that speaks for the brothers so all their interactions with other NPCs have to be pantomimed with gibberish Italian

It really was lightning in a bottle and its a shame Alphadream never could recreate it

M&L series and SSS in particular has god-tier art style. Easily my favorite Mario look.

Honestly I've always though SSS mogs Paper Mario in expedience; PM1 in particular takes a while to get going - you don't even get action commands until around the first hour iirc.

Meanwhile SSS lets you skip tutorials left and right, enemies have low HP and animations are quick and snappy so battles are brisk, and I honestly enjoy the more irreverent humour and fish-out-of-water setting of SSS to PMs more traditional narrative. ("Woah, a village of friendly koopas? So wild!" versus Bowser immeadiately teaming up with you on account that he can't kidnap the princess in her current state, two French Twins who brew soda and teach you a new ability by bonking each other over their heads with hammers, or Luigi homolusting over Prince Peasley, etc)

God I fucking love this game.

What does /vr/ think about Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga for the GBA?
