Necessity to obtain said weapon by beating a stage and activating a Nightmare Effect, or dealing with them without one. I prefer the latter as while those are really basic. they still require you to engage in dodging and combat, trying to deal as much damage as you can in-between shots, especially on the rising lava one which is rather unpredictable. In X3, trying to do better isn't interesting because most enemies fold even without any weapons or items, save for some of the ones that slow you down being quicker to take care of with Frost Shield.

To put it this way: in X6, Scaravich's stage on Xtreme has some enemy sections that are genuinely nightmarish to deal with if you're not abusing Zero's techniques, but those sections tend to be very dynamic and exhilirating when you try to clear them, let alone do well. In X3, even final stage bosses like Godkarmachine, Vile, Doppler or Sigma's first form are basic and repetitive, and because there isn't much to go for, it ends up being boring. I do think it's a matter of preference, as people enjoy X3 for their own reasons even if I might see it as a shallow game.
