Also, if you want to see the direction JRPGs chose NOT to take, you should try Romancing SaGa 3. Sandbox JRPG with multiple storylines and complete freedom is a weird thing to imagine.

SaGa thread, guys.

I'm currently playing Romancing SaGa 3, and I have a problem. Suddenly, my formations have become limited to 5 party members, while I already have 6. I'm almost certain that before I went to adjust formations all 6 characters went to battle.

What the fuck do I do?

Also: that open-ended adventure, holy shit. I always considered SaGa games to be misguided nonsensical wanks of autistic proportions, but this is one of the most entertaining free-roaming JRPGs I've ever seen. Shit, it really is an open-world JRPG. And, despite the shoddy translation, it's brilliant. It isn't even that weird, it's just that the whole thing is so different from a normal JRPG experience.

>On the subject of SaGa though, I do find it interesting that Kawazu was involved with FF1. While it was a basic game mechanically, he did coin the concept of "let the player create whatever party they want and experiment".

I really really wish they did more with Romancing SaGa series because it's probably the closest thing to a sandbox JRPG.
