Probably play the unity version. Dos has gamebreaking bugs. Also most of the mechanics don't work on dos and were fixed in Unity. Only downside is the dos version looks way better and even though Unity has an option to look like the Dos version it's off.
>What am I in for with Arena and Daggerfall?
Daggerfall is all about the dungeons. You'll realize very fast that all the "crazy emergent mechanics" are really just 1-off gimmicks you see once. Asking around for directions and getting an answer based on your charisma + your ability to talk to nobility/thieves/commoners sounds cool on paper, but most of the quests are MMO-tier fetch questing. It's all about the dungeons. Most of them suck. You will occasionally find a cool one. They are also full of cheap tricks, so I recommend knowing how to levitate or having a scroll of levitation.

Most of the people who shill Daggerfall do so because they basically ignore that most of the game doesn't work. They're the type of people who solo play empty MMOs. I can look past flaws but not to that degree.

>Just get unity for the mouse look but avoid the one from gog as it comes with preinstalled mods of ambiguous quality from what I hear.
I only played the dos version and I remember having mouselook.

Pretty much all the cool things you hear about with this game, like going to court or buying a boat, are isolated moments that are cool once. The systems don't actually jive together as well as people make you think. Most of the abilities aren't even implemented properly. There is serious jank like someone you need to kill is stuck in an inaccessible room.

I hope you like dungeons. That is the only reason to play this game and most of them suck, but a few of them are amazing. It has a lot of potential. Hopefully the Unity mod scene will unlock it and not just make it Oblivion/Skyrim/Morrowind with shit graphics.

Honestly the only dungeons I ever liked were OOTs, Daggerfalls, Down in the Bonehoard and Arx Fatalis. Most of the time I hate them

The dungeons were shit but they could get really cool sometimes. But yeah the game is trash. I was hoping Daggerfall Unity would actually add substance to the game, but almost all the mods are graphical overhauls or slapping nu-game shit on it like healthbars for the enemies. No one is really trying to fix the half-baked systems like the speech system or justify the thief class or anything.

Oblivions dungeons sucked dick unless they were handmade like the first one you see right out of the tutorial area that has secret areas and a story going on that isn't jotted down as a quest.

Sometimes it's cool. Most of the time it's bad. That's really the entire game in a nutshell.

Yeah I noticed that too. I picked it up around 2019 just to give it a spin because of how heavily it was praised, then when I came back and asked what people saw in it everyone was shitting on it. The only thing I found interesting in the game was the massive gigantic rooms that you couldn't even see the ceiling to like pic related.

Everything outside of the dungeons either doesn't work or was very clearly randomly generated with 4-5 flavors to chose from. Like literally any half-baked indie game on Steam.

For me Morrowind lived up to it's reputation. Daggerfall wasn't even close.

It's OK. The dungeons all suck until you strike gold. It feels like the game is spread out way to thin. I couldn't really keep at it.

It's one of those games where it sucks 80% of the time then you trip over something fucking crazy. An example would be the dungeons, which are the core of the game. Most of them are giant blobs of spaghetti that suck. Then you find a dungeon that is contained entirely in one giant room that's so big it has fucking towers and shit in it that you can fly around to. Then you start learning more and more about the game and interesting things to play with and understand why some things exist.

It's one of those games you wont enjoy unless you sink 100 hours into it and understand whats below the surface.
