Just beat 2 for the first time, it has taken me a long time to beat this game in a single sitting since I gave up a lot when I started playing it, but damn what a satisfying game.
Anyway Classic Mega Man thread, X and Legends discussion is also allowed.
Honestly, I've only beaten 2 and I own X4, but I suck ass at it. I own Mega Man 64 as well, almost done with it but put it on the side for a while now. I've played the original X on emulator and I own a couple none /vr/ Mega Man games like 9 and the Zero collection on DS but again those aren't /vr/.
I usually hear that 2 & 3 are the most highly regarded of the classic series, how about the othwr entries?
What about ROM hacks?
Are there any "Mega Man-likes" that rival the quality of the series on other retro systems?

What was the first game you beat?

You've finished your quest, OP. You know what to do.

The amount of time required for "full" immersion is always greater than the length of time that all the gameplay elements can remain fresh and exciting. Some amount of tedium, punctuated by new discoveries, is essential so that the player actually feels like they're the one at the helm. If there are never any moments of aimlessness or drudgery, it will be impossible to both build up to strong climaxes nor relieve them. All the dazzling colors will blur and fade into each other, and the player will feel like they're on one of those Epcot rides with pretty displays off to each side that are meant to impress them but which they can't really engage with. Sure, they might have a throttle and a brake, but they know they're going to end up seeing everything everyone else did, and in the same order. You need a bit of both aimlessness and repetition to feel like you actually have your feet on the ground of that virtual world. This value is being lost as games become more mainstream and a larger portion of the consumer base just wants to ride the rail and get dazzled by a few displays. These are people who don't know the incredible euphoria, pride, relief, and joy you feel when you finally beat that NES game—like Ninja Gaiden or Contra—for the first time, even though you've been trying on and off for months or even years. It's not a feeling you get from token participation that consists of pressing the right button when you're supposed and told to; it requires more expenditure than that, but the reward of a good, challenging game is many, many times the cost. A good game, being well-crafted art, is far more than the sum of each moment of gameplay. If you're not willing to put energy into a game as an act of hope or faith, you'll never get that much out of them. Oh well, people who don't understand that intuitively are lost causes anyway.

Was the ending to MM2 the death of Mega Man? I mean he walks back after the battle through all the seasons, and then we see him "fade" away and only his helmet is left when he died.

I guess that was the original end to the series before they had to rush out the "unfinished" mega man 3 (prove of that theory).
