FF1 borrows game mechanics directly from D&D (like spell slots) and even a D&D monster they had to change in the US version to avoid violating copyright.
Somebody at Square obviously read the D&D books. Weird because the rest of the series seems like your typical monkeys copying Wizardry and Dragon Quest without knowing anything about pen and paper rpgs.
