Play the arcade version. The music is better, the sound effects are better and the graphics are better. Also, AFAIK the last level is even harder because the Red Arremers wake up more easily (and have more complex patterns, though they are still easily beaten by baiting them to land and rush towards you) and each stair has two gargoyles waiting for you on both sides, which means you will get your ass raped unless you have mastered rapid-firing with the cross (shield).

I played the arcade version through in two sessions. If the sixth level wasn't so motherfucking hard I probably could have beaten it in one session, but it was just too much.

I played the arcade version through and it asn't hell until the final level with stairs and double gargoyle ambushes. Before that you can get by with luck and tenacity, but those camping motherfuckers need perfect rapid firing with cross to avoid getting raped in the ass.

The arcade versions (Makaimura, Dai Makaimura) are pretty ruthless, but unlimited continues reduce them to "merely" tests of endurance. That being said, they are still definitely the hardest games I have personally completed.

The last level of the first one has some plain bullshit going on, though. On each floor of the tower there are two gargoyles/giants/whatever lurking on top of each ladder. If you haven't mastered the art of rapid firing with cross/shield, the second gargoyle will rape your ass without mercy. Once you do master that passage, the rest of the game becomes much easier.

Too bad the gameplay of Super is slow as fuck in general and they removed shooting up/down. I can't even finish the first stage

Does emulating the arcade games with unlimited continues (ie. credits) count? I did Dai Makaimura about a month ago and Makaimura last weekend.
I beat the former in one sitting (maybe around three hours), but the latter was so exhausting that I had to save and continue later next day.

Holy shit, that fifth level of Makaimura was such a fucking pain in the ass. The Cyclops and Dragon were pretty damn easy when you got the patterns down, but the following loads of Red Arreemers, "Big Men" (or whatever the tough brown guys that lurk over the ladders and rush you in pairs are called) AND the two Devils at the top floor were pretty much the worst endurance battle I have encountered so far in gaming. After that I beat the Satan in two lives, beat the rest of the levels again in a few more, took some time once again in the fifth level and after that finally beat the game.

Dai Makaimura (Ghosts'n Ghouls) was a little harder in general, but at least the game mechanics and level design were much fairer (shooting up/down, weapons were more balanced, golden armor bonuses, no suddenly spawning enemies (like the pink imps in the first game) etc.) so it didn't feel as frustrating. The giant maggot boss (Ohm) was probably the toughest part, both because the boss itself was so difficult and the path to it was so long. The second run with the "Psycho-Cannon" was also pretty tough at times because of the weapons piss-poor range.

Last bosses were pure cakewalk in both, though.
