Mortal Kombat wasn't really MARKETED to anybody who didn't buy arcade games, but its combination of digitized film of real people, and hyperviolence (if you knew how to perform any fatalities, barring UPPERCUT INTO THE PIT) made its fame spread far and wide. Also it played pretty well.

The console ports were aimed at kids, because duh, but then the helicopter-parenting soccer-twats freaked out because they games they let their kids play all day long in the arcade at the mall was now on the TV at home. Since they couldn't deal with the fact that their own failure as parents led their perfect little angels to MURDER SIMULATORS, they launched a political campaign railing against violent video games, claiming that publishers were corrupting children, not mommy's pill habit.

All I got out of playing arcade games constantly was image related, not an uncontrollable urge to tear out people's hearts and eat them to restore my health.
