We're looking at personality/behavioral flaw in mother, too protective of son for his own good, at age of 12, this seem very far gone, this could be of irreparable damage, basically, she still is treating son as if he of 5 years old, not coping with him growing up, this will be problem as boy is entering puberty, eventually, he lashes out, and she still stuck with mindset of him being tiny little boy will overreact like usual, teenage years of his will be very strained.

Does his father not help, or is he, how you say, "whipped" or helping enforce this bad behavior?
