Thank you, that sums up what I was thinking pretty nicely. The original games had the simple kumite tournament premise where most participants were super natural and foreign. We were free to fill in the gaps but the games still kept a consistent setting and atmosphere. Then MK3 came out and shattered the illusion. It could still be repaired but they decided to double down with these childish plot points instead. Moron Kombat is becoming a less ironic title over the years.

>and a shitload of alternate realms just so they'd have more material for tv shows and movies.
I'm actually okay with the idea of Chaos and Order realm but they still have so much more to work with and they'd just be a distraction.

The original 2D games? I'd be interested in seeing a video about it but I know UMK3 had stupid shit. Here's some things off the top of my head but someone correct me if I'm wrong.
>Different character normals had priority over another so LP on Kabal would beat out LP on Sheeva
>Dedicated block button which eliminated almost all cross-ups (they should get rid of this)
>Throwing could be blocked by holding back
>No overheads/mids so absolutely no reason not to crouch
>Jab animations could be shortened by pressing the run button (run-jab)
>This made the meta into a turtle/chip fest where the aggressor would slowly chip down health using run-jab pressure and the turtling opponent would try to find a gap in the pressure
>The closest thing the game had to a mix-up was calling out when someone was going to try to escape run-jab pressure by attempting to combo
>Character hit boxes where very inconsistent causing certain dial combos and normals to whiff
>No back dash so zoning mostly wasn't a good option (some exceptions)
>Stryker was unable to run-jab pressure because of bad hitboxes so he became mid tier despite having a midscreen infinite
>Sektor as player 2 couldn't have a smart missile and dumb missile out at the same time but player 1 could

It was made to be much simpler over all to make it easier to get into for beginners.

Yeah see back then I was more of an ML fan. I still played a large amount of SF2 because it's what more people played and it's clearly a better game, but I have never liked the SF characters as much and think 2 especially is a pretty ugly game. MK had that 80's action movie vibe and I really liked how wacky the cast was. I think that's why I liked SF3 as well since it had more interesting characters to my tastes and it was gorgeous.

Actually it was MK9 that mostly made me move on from SF4 again even though it was never as good and then Injustice which was really my jam for a while. I had a shit ton of fun with that game.

Still trying to beat MK2 on easy. I swear it's impossible. Anyone who says they can do it is clearly lying.

>Yet you keep replying to him.
I'm 95% sure he is who I think he is. It's always funny to poke him.

MKII had a lot of the best fatalities. My specialty was playing with Shang and switching to Sub for the kill, doing the first half of his freeze fatality then morphing to Scorp and toasying them. Good times!

My favorite thing to do in the whole series was in MK2. If you beat someone as Shang Tsung while transformed into Sub Zero, do the first part of his Fatality where you freeze your opponent and then shatter them. But instead of finishing it, you have enough time to morph into Scorpion and do the Toasty Fatality on them while they're still frozen. Being 15 I thought that was super bad ass.
