This isn't even counting the tons of "Win at Nintendo" books or the dozens of third party Japanese guides. I'm not saying that it's impossible for a kid to beat the more frustrating Nintendo games without a guide, but they absolutely existed for games like Zelda II and Simon's Quest. Remember; conventional wisdom by game companies at the time was that Americans were really stupid and needed guides for everything that wasn't a platformer.

I just finished Dragon Quest I and I gotta be honest, I ended up using a walkthrough which I really dislike. I mean, I respect what this series did to JRPGs, it's understandably archaic but a lot of elements originated here are still being used in games to this day, but what I want to bitch about is shit like.

>Find one specific spot in the ruin town Domdora
>Fight one enemy that's just slightly above your level at the time
>check the floor after the fight for an important equipment despite game never indicating that monsters drop items
How the fuck did Japanese people ever figured this shit out? Is there a legitimate thought process that would naturally lead you to this?

And just to be clear again, this is not bitching about Dragon Quest, because I think it's a fact that a lot of early video games had really fucking cryptic shit that you had no idea of knowing. And Dragon Quest is a great series. But, like, how do you deal with it bros? Do you think it's ok to use walkthroughs when you feel like the game is bullshiting you?
