You might like Hi no tori (the MSX version). It feels like proto 2D S&P. Except instead of having cabal-type 3D shooting it's a vertical shmup. Fairly simple in that regard, has some upgrades and items you can use but doesn't have melee attacks or anything fancy. But it does have jumping and platforming. Shooting & jumping in this game made me think of playing a sort of 2D ancestor of Sin and Punishment.
Be warned it has a really weird progression system where you play levels in a loop until you find certain keys to advance through new paths, so you will be having to revisit old levels again, it's really weird but I guess fits the source material's theme of eternal recurrence lol.

I recommend Hi no tori (aka Firebird) for MSX2.
There is a Famicom side-scroller of the same name, but the MSX2 game is totally different, not a side-scroller, instead it's a vertical scroll shooter with platforming built in, so the sense of shooting and jumping at the same time made me think of it as a 2D sin and punishment.
Bosses aren't as good though, and the level design might be a hit or miss depending on your taste, it's not linear, instead it's infinite loop levels and the only way to beat a stage is to find a key and enter the right door, so you will be looping multiple times in some levels looking for the key/looking for the door, and you will also need to go back to previous levels to actually beat the game. It's a bit convoluted, but when you learn the game it's fun as fuck to blast through it and beat it in 30 minutes or so.

Hi no Tori/Firebird for MSX2.
You play as an ugly big nosed murderer with a missing arm on his way to enlightenment.

I know what you mean. I also wish there were more games like this that incorporated platforming into the rail shooting gameplay.
Not really 3D and not the same, but you should check out Hi no tori/Firebird for MSX (not the Famicom game that's a side-scroller). This game also incorporates shooting+jumping while moving forward like S&P, good use of the platforming, you can jump in all directions.

I made a thread about these kind of games some time ago, but didn't get too many replies for the kind of game I was looking for.
Pic related is Hi no tori, and you not only walk, but you can also jump, in all 8 directions. This gives the game a platform element on top of shooting.
The only other game that gave me a similar feel was Sin and Punishment, even though that's 3D, it still has both shooting and platforming elements while still being on-rails.

>I know there are a couple of games like this, like Isolated Warrior and Elemental Master.
Yeah, there's also Knightmare from Konami, which was likely a direct influence on Hi no tori, but none of those games really have a jump button.
Hi no tori adds platforming element to the shooting, that's what made me think of Sin and Punishment.
