Shinobi isn't meritless. But this is a thread about which game is better. I didnt make the OP. You can say that the game has unique ideas and thats fair. there is no reason there couldnt be a modern shinobi done right that would be better than any other ninja game in theory.

but to act like shinobi for the ps2 in its current state is better than ninja gaiden is illogical. its contrarian. its underwhelming.

The puzzle aspect you mention is interesting for what it is, i like the idea of it, but like I have said before, that is only good for one playthrough. Shinobi is a on rails game. The enemy placement doesnt ever change. And while you can say its an interesting idea, a puzzle approach is the opposite of what most people want or expect from a ninja game. Tenchu is another rough around the edges game that I wish I could praise but it is an unpolished mess as well. But the stealth mechanics are great when they work. At times better than MGS even. And the "puzzles" can be tackled in many ways. And to my knowledge it really is the only only ninja series that encourages stealth and finding unorthodox routes and sneaking up on enemies. It utilizes traps and grappling hooks. People want either Stealth or action in a ninja game. Tenchu has the stealth. Its action is lacking. Ninja gaiden goes all in on the action route. It abandoned stealth which is sad but the end result is still addicting to play.

The puzzle aspect is more interesting I would say, in a tenchu approach, where you can scope ahead and try to plan how you will get past certain enemies or how you will take them out. The way you describe shinobi almost makes it sounds more like a rhythm game. it feels like a tech demo to me.
