>Be ASCII
>Wanted to make a PC standard in Japan the same way VHS did for videotapes.
>Licensed out a obscured computer no one has ever heard of (Spectravideo SVI-318) to be the bases of it's standard.
>Call it the MSX.
>Got healthy support from Konami, Hal Laboratory and Compile.
>Computers were made by Sony, Panasonic, Yamaha and even non-Japanese companies like Philips and Goldstar (now LG).
>Was mostly used for gaming as NEC held the business sector of Japan, but they sold better then the NEC ones (because of Konami) and were even used in air traffic control in airports.
>The original MSX sold 7 million units out of it's 8 million units sold including it's later models and lasted a full 5 years in the market.
>Decided to make a MSX2, only to not increase the onscreen color from 16 to 256 in it's game modes (screens 4 and 5), not increase it's sprite count from 32 to 128, not have horizontal scrolling when the rest of the gaming industry was moving to start requiring it, no hi rez mode in progressive scan (only interlace) and upgrade the main sound chip to a YM2203.
>Super Mario Bros happened.
>MSX2 bombed because it lacked horizontal scrolling, MSX' market went to the Famicom (PC88/98 for the PC side of things).
>Made the MSX2+, ended up getting ass raped by the PC Engine, Mega Drive and X68000 because it was too little too late, also the PC98 was still a thing and IBM compatibles were starting to take off because of DOS/V.
>Everyone who made the MSX successful left for Nintendo, NEC and Sega, only Panasonic was left.
>Made the MSX Turbo R, did even worse then the MSX2+ because by 1990 everyone's eyes was on the Super Famicom.
>Kills off the MSX line, Panasonic replaces it with Trip Hawkins' 3DO, Goldstar also does the same.
>ASCII becomes software only until they filed for bankruptcy in 2008, rights were sold off at piece meal.
>Microsoft reentered the gaming market in 2001 with the original Xbox.
>MSX division was spon off in 2002 as the MSX Association.

Yeah, at least on eBay in US. C64 starts at around $279, MSX starts from like $200. Speccy is around the same price. I still think OP should just build a dedicated retro computer for around the same price, though

What would 8-bit era games be like with analog controls and 14 buttons?

Oh wait that's the MSX.

Just for the sake of comparison, what were the capabilities of Japanese PC systems of the time periods talked about in this thread?

I know the MSX systems could do smooth scrolling with some add-ins or later revisions.
