Came here to post this. Fantastic series, easily up there with DQ and FF, and westerners have never heard of it.

I wouldn't buy a PC Engine. The consoles are expensive, the ODE/flashcart solutions are expensive, and the system is 8 bit and easily emulated.

If you want to play through a CRT, get a Wii and WiiMednafen. If you want to play through a CRT and you're autistic about accuracy that 99.9% of people will never notice, get a MiSTer. If you want to play on a modern display, just use Retroarch, ideally with some nice CRT shaders. If you want a separate system from your PC, just set up RetroPie.

There's really no reason to own a PC Engine these days unless you bought it years ago when it was cheap and all these modern options didn't exist. Even if they do look cool. I guess you could buy one as a display piece if you really wanted, but actually using it is pretty pointless.

The Far East of Eden series is one of those things that essentially completely skipped the west, which is insane when these titles were on par with DQ and FF. You had voice acting in 1989, cut scenes, Joe Hisaishi doing the composing, and a charming story with a lot of comedy.

Red Company went on to do Sakura Wars, which skipped the west too. They were probably the biggest major developer with little to no fanbase outside of Japan.

Why would you care about games to begin with? It's the console prices that are atrocious.

Thankfully, I just run all my PC Engine stuff through my MiSTer, which cost far less than it would've cost me to just get a decent RGB capable super CD setup these days. And occasionally Retroarch for RPGs because fuck grinding at 1x speed.

We're hitting the point at which original hardware is becoming pretty worthless. All I collect these days are controllers, while praying that my PVM lasts another 20 years before I have to recap it.

Sure. Not as good as a decent CRT, but it's good enough for JRPGs and slow paced games without much need for motion clarity.
