In fact Evangelion had trouble getting their first sponsors, since the mecha designs didn't convince toy makers. SEGA was the first Evangelion sponsor, that's why there's so many Saturn games. But Sega also did trading cards and even toys (the first Evangelion toys were made by Sega).
Evangelion then took off in popularity and Ban Dai and the rest jumped the bandwagon.

You should watch Evangelion, regardless.
I understand the hype and the crazy fanbase surrounding it might scare people away, but it's worth it.
