It's actually just because it's annoying to stumble around in the dark and banging my shins on boxes. I pretty quickly built up resistance to all the predictable jump-scares.
I just find it more convenient, like using mouselook in Doom.

I mean, I liked Doom 3, but it WAS flawed.

That said, the chainsaw was cool as shit, just fucking charge in, ducking, dodging, jumping, strafing, avoiding enemy fire and swipes, and then splitting them like firewood.

I haven't really heard any other chainsaw sounds besides the original Doom ones, and the Doom 3 ones. I really like the horrible grinding noises the Doom 3 chainsaw makes against hard surfaces, makes it feel genuine.

I think how they did the chainsaw in Doom 3 was the best part, if you put in the effort, you could use it to fight just about any enemy in the game, and it was fun. I loved how powerful the saw was there.

Yeah, it helps transform the game from "oww I banged my shins in the dark again" to an alright shooter. I think having a Half-Life style flashlight was one of the better decisions they did for the BFG Edition.

Plus, the chainsaw was just perfect, I really wish they gave it to you earlier in the game.
Or at all in the expansions.

Don't get me wrong, neither of them are perfect, but I appreciate them for what they are. It's a shame they'll probably never revisit Rage again, because even through it's shortcomings, I thought it had interesting things going for it.
