It's universally agreed that anything after 1995 is considered cancer. As these people are in the middle of a cancerous turning point that's filled with social media, smartphones, memes and self-entitlement.

I'll preface this by saying that this isn't a "when I was a kid things were so much better" stories. But rather an observation that is mostly true.
Even though the Internet had been around for a while in 2003, It was still far away from the critical mass that started occuring in 2007/2008
This was still a time when you actually had to search out information on a subject you were interested in. You had to dig for it. A process which for centuries has weeded lazy and ignorant people out. Broadband was still uncommon in 2003. Most people had dial up. And people certainly didn't know how to use a computer.

Those barriers have been reduced thanks to smartphone access and social media. You might say I'm autistic or hold resent towards people like that. And that's partly true. Back in primary school I was mildly made fun of for liking video games. And certain people made a effort to ostracize me from groups because of it. Fast forward ten years and suddenly the whole paradigm shift has changed, and those people are now the one posing with Zelda tattoos and posting video game shit for their own personal social gain.

It's the difference between someone actually being genuinely interested in a interest/hobby. Versus using that for petty social gain.
