if it wasn't for psygnosis, the playstation would have died early on in its life. sony were desperate for a cheaper solution to develop software. sony had to make development costs cheap because nobody was going to fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars on unix workstations for a console that nobody was certain would even sell. creating an affordable solution for developers destroyed nintendo and sega. they couldn't compete at that level (from sdk+hardware to licensing)

playstation won because it wasn't sega or nintendo - the corporations, not the systems. sony offered favourable licensing terms to developers, gave them greater control over their final product, you could use any PC to program the playstation dev machine etc. sega and nintendo couldn't compete like that. they've always insisted they retain control over nearly every aspect of their food chains.
