The original working title for the game was Exhumed. However they couldn't get the rights to it in the US, so they reserved it in Europe and decided Powerslave would be a good alternate title for the US market as they were Iron Maiden fans and it just fit.

Thing I always wondered was why did Iron Maiden threaten to sue over 3D Realms using the name Ion Maiden for a game but they didn't in this case. Could be because they just weren't aware of it, Powerslave had an abysmally small marketing budget which is partially what led to it's poor sales.
