Anyway, the best way to deal with the enemies is to make sure the playfield (ie. the black area) has even multiples of 2x2 meta tiles so they can all have a common color palette. That way the enemies can move from metatile to metatile and not change colors. The NES has enough colors that we may actually be able to have the colored level bgs like in the Atari--just set the bg to the lowest luminance level.
