Honestly while Earthbound is my favorite game ever made I wouldn't really call it "dark" honestly. Still, I suppose there are some more serious moments or references.

One scene I find notable is the Mu training due to how brutal it is described as.

Also the Happy Happy cult, while silly in the actual game, are based on a real Japanese cult that was active during the time Mother 2 was being developed. They actually did acts of terrorism within Japan that ended in fatalities. While the game's cult is quite goofy their basis was a genuine danger and real extremist group.

I love Earthbound but it isn't really "deep", and that's great. Earthbound has a few maybe sort of potent minutes but it never tries or wants to be something that leaves you deep in thought. Earthbound is more of just is a game that brings a sense of innocence and childhood. It pokes some fun at real social issues but in such absurd and extreme ways that aren't meant to be deep criticism.

The thing though is it is a reminder that this is a fictional story.

I won't go too into as M3 isn't retro but M3's entire message is about loss and acceptance. Players will ultimately finish the game and need to move on, do things with their lives. It tells you that the game, and I suppose video games or media in general, will still be there fir us when we need it, but it says we have to accept our lives for what they are and live them regardless of the circumstances.

Earthbound is kind of like that too. In this weird moment of the absurd and surreal we are reminded that it is you, the player, that brought the heroes there. This experience has been yours just as much as it has been the heroes. We win simply because we are the player and we want to, we have the will to win against Giygas and you having made it to this point shows it.

Sorry for the babble, I don't mean to sound pretentious and hope I don't. Just some feelings I get from the endings

I love all three but I guess I have to say 2=3>1. Both M2 and M3 are equally good for different reasons in my opinion, I can't choose a favorite and both tie as my favorite games ever made. While I personally love M1 I can admit it has aged a considerable amount.

Dude shut the fuck up. I love all of them but sometimes deeper isn't better for everyone. For some collecting eight melodies is enough.

To me the series just has such a sincerity to it that little else, it even just game, achieve. I know gameplay is just your simple DQ fare, as a DQ fan I like that honestly, but as much as people like to spout otherwise games are more then their gameplay. Gameplay is the most important feature, this is always true, but it is nice when other things have thought and care as well. With the mother series nothing is really like them in tone, not even all these recent clones that try to be. I love all three games a lot, it's my favorite game series in all honesty, and honestly I will just admit that it's because mother feels genuinely optimistic and humble.r

You have to understand that mother 3 came from a different place then the first two. With 3 Itoi didn't want to just do the "apple cheek american boy travels america / the world with friends and wackiness ensures". He has even said he's aware mother 3 would probably disappoint fans of M1 and M2 but he still did it and honestly I love that.

In a way. I'll be honest and say I have no idea what gintama is so I won't comment on that comparison.

The thing is really nothing is quite like earthbound or any mother game. The fans of it are so hardcore since for those it does appeal to the appeal is really strong. I reccommend earthbound as something everybody should at least try as for those it does appeal to it really appeals to them.
