My old computer went from a 286-12, to 386DX-40, to 486DX4-100. I was all about any and all games that took advantage of VGA graphics, but still was amused switching over to EGA+CGA just to see the difference. Did the same thing trying out how awful things sounded not using the SoundBlaster (2.0) with the internal PC speaker. I was pretty amazed with the few programs that were able to synthesize speech with the PC speaker. I remember getting any and every magazine about Cobra Mission because I was so excited for its release, and the game met my expectations. Was a big fan of Megatech games, but sadly they only released 4 games on DOS. The preorder for Dragon Knight 3 took so long they included the upgrade disc for free.

Hell yeah! There seems to be a lot that would disappear as they have not really been curated by a platform holder or just too obscure. Especially when the nature of some games are online only and allowed to fade away. I used to play a lot of DOS games, one of my favorites from my youth was Cobra Mission. It had rough dialog, but was a decently fun JRPG styled game.

I am unfamiliar with PC-98, so it is nice to have DOS games which appealed to my sensibilities on a platform I had. Even had a chance to visit their booth at a trade show. It is a shame, despite being some of my favorite games at the time, they couldn't survive.

It was just the game packaging to me in the late 80s to early 90s. My opinion of PC games was that it was just a different dimension from the consoles and still had games that were fun; as far as I knew, it was the origin point of the console games I liked. As for what happened, digital distribution is more convenient to the end user and less resources needed by the publisher for packaging design, manufacture, and logistics; plus retailers can be less concerned about physical space and liquidating excess stock.

I kept an overwhelmingly large portion of my old PC games because they were just tucked away and I never gave much of a thought.

There used to be lots of porn games advertised in the back of computer magazines. Typically in a text list of games the retailer had used for their advertising space. They were mostly mail order, so one could always call for a catalog. It was not like they hid that the stuff was porn with titles like "Porn Pipe" (Pipe Dream or that Bioshock minigame, but with a penis leading to a vajayjay) "Neauty and the Cyborgasm", "Michael Ninn's Latex: The Game", etc. listed under "Adult Software".

Congratulations! I am super jealous. I am currently trying to build a J-Win98SE machine, and that's a game I remember wanting from Himeya store, but I didn't have the money. Maybe in 4-5 more months, I may have the computer up and running, and I hope to hunt down those C's Ware games.

The on OP posted stars Kirishima Mana which is voiced by Hayashibara Megumi, and is more in line with her usual roles of a "wild girl" opposed to Ayanami Rei. The game has the pacing and tone of the animated series and plays out like an episode. It is a non-canon side story to the animated franchise. Kirishima Mana took a good interest in Shinji, and genuinely cares about him with no fears of showing it. She shows Shinji a good time and in a couple of the endings she fucks Shinji's brains out and essentially tells the whole series to fuck off (probably a real good ending to the series). A surprisingly popular character in its day that only appeared for that one game.

I am not a fan of the series, I just like the characters. The game is just a visual novel. Hits a few comfy notes but ultimately not for non-fans of the series as it was aimed at people who watched the series.

I had thought Megatech repurposed and ported the pixel art from PC-98 games over to DOS. Since I don't think Faythe was in the Japanese release of Cobra Mission. Also I think they added in the interactions and purchases into Metal & Lace. The sequel on Ningyou Tsukai I think did have a DOS/V release (as I had downloaded it).

I am aware of the very h games that was the original line of V.G. games. TGL releases never really did get much spotlight outside of Japan.

>>4114881
I remember someone tracing over the art of the box on the right and repurposing the pose/body for a Tifa drawing. Even in the game, Takeuchi Yuka has a doppleganger, also the same character designer used essentially the same character design for Akira in one of the Viper series of games. Just look up some of those Sogna or Viper games.

Season of the Sakura was a pretty cool visual novel. I wish I bought in its day. I still want it too. Shame there wasn't more with not-Katsuragi Misato. Even back then I recognized the Evangelion, St. Tail, and Rayearth ripoffs but I think part of the charm was that it took the characters and jammed them into the same school setting.

I think there are plenty of visual novels that offers stories that are different from just school love. I've gone through a few that were mystery thrillers, some explore horror, some are fantastical. The venerable Chrono Trigger had a visual novel sequel in Radical Dreamers. I think Elf's Yu-No game is pretty good. The C's Ware titles like Eve Burst Error, Eve: The Lost One, Desire, etc. are compelling too (I have not played Eve Zero yet) that goes beyond character archetypes and focus on their narratives.

I visit my local Walmart (in the middle of nowhere US, they are the center of our lives) and I see they still sell visual novels like The Walking Dead, Life Is Strange, The Wolf Among Us, etc. so I am guessing people are finding reasons to pick up new VNs anyway. I think of the genre like those pulp paperback fiction books you'd find, disposable entertainment where some enjoyment can be had. I think I even read that some of those games won awards, so I guess they are getting recognition even with their anime girl archetypes.

This will be my last weekend off until a work schedule change (was nice to have consecutive days off), so I am considering working on my 486 again. Didn't see much in the way of CD-ROM sources or pointers, so I'll ask one more time. Is there a way to convert the SCUMM-VM talkie files to a way an old computer could play? I don't think it has the power to emulate and mount a virtual CD-ROM drive, but it has a physical one that I think still works. Going to give it a try later.

I will admit, CGA were before the time my cousins and I owned a computer so I am not personally familiar with computer composite output.

I actually remember playing the arcade Contra games in the arcade and it looks like the one on the left. I do live near quite a few arcades and I think at least 1 of them still has it and I am pretty sure it is on a RGB monitor (in tate mode) appearing the more pale colors and dithering for shading. I just cannot afford my arcade's $15 entrance fee (it's all free play) or beer/food charges for the many barcades to take an actual picture.

Sonic 1 and Streets 2 I did play on RF and RGB in their day, and I still see the dithering as a shading technique like hatching/cross-hatching/stippling. PC games, namely ones from Japan used their dithering techniques to keep their low color counts, yet attain an impressive look while having each pixel identifiable on a sharp monitor.

I just recently decided to get parts together for an old DOS machine built for my memories. The first things which come to mind for me to install are:

Epic Pinball
Star Control 2
Princess Maker 2
Sam & Max: Hit the Road
Tyrian
Zone 66
Ultima 7 (& Part 2 with expansions)
Legend of Kyrandia (& 2)
Scorched Earth
Civilization
Masters of Magic
Wing Commander 2
X-wing (& Tie Fighter)
Doom (specifically 1.1-1.2)
Leisure Suit Larry 5 (& 6)
Syndicate
UFO
Privateer
Day of the Tentacle
Alone in the Dark
SimCity 2000
Crusader: No Remorse
Raptor: Call of the Shadows
Warcraft 2
King's Quest 6

(I would name all the point & click adventures from Sierra and Lucasarts but the ones listed are the ones that are most essential to me)

For the not-great but still important to me essential games on DOS includes pic related with:
Seasons of the Sakura
Super Tetris
Pirates
Power Dolls
Street Fighter 2 bootlegs
Inherit the Earth

>>3902013
For platformers, there aren't many I recall but I enjoyed and will install are:
Halloween Harry
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Commander Keen
Prince of Persia (& 2)
Duke Nukem 2

I remember Jill of the Jungle and Skunny, but those were too weird for me even then.
Based on posts from around it seems I should try out:
World Rally Fever
System Shock
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Populous
Theme Park
Beneath a Steel Sky

I too welcome recommendations matching my taste.

I had a 486DX4 100 system all the way until around 2007, then I had to move and I regret throwing it out because I thought DOSbox is pretty good. Like my consoles, I emulate too, but I do like using the original hardware.

I am thinking about buying the parts to build another 486DX4, any suggested components? I went with the original Sound Blaster back in the day, but would a Pro or 16 be better? I remember some games liked Roland sound cards and others the Gravis Ultrasound.

I know my hoarder uncle still probably has a low end Gateway (yuck) Pentium stored away, quite possibly with a large CRT monitor. Could maybe harvest it for parts, like the 2x or 4x CD-ROM drive, which would be the only way I can transfer files I can now get from my current system via CD-R.

All to enjoy these games from my childhood again.

Played and loved over 40 of those (diskette sections). Some of my all time favorites there. However, right now I can also think of a few Epic Megagames I also enjoyed like Solar Winds and Zone 66 which are not on that chart. Also, I loved the Legend of Kyrandia games which I cannot find on that chart either.

I had so much fun with DOS games back then. There was rec.games.computer those interesting dodgy warez sites/IRC channels which also helped in exposing me to games I wouldn't have originally tried/bought like UFO turning out to being one of my all time favorites. So hard to pick just one. I kept a 486DX4 all the way until 2008 when I by some madness I thought "DOSbox is plenty good now, may as well toss this old thing" and now I regret trying to escape my hoarding nature.

Here, some sounds to remember the times with:

I think it already is. It is surprising how much they cost from the stores around me. I am fortunate to hold onto what I do have, but regret the times I had to "lighten the load" when I had to move, and lost some great oens like Star Control 2, Leisure Suit Larry 6, etc.

Today, I will take the 6 hour drive to an old stomping grounds, which had some big box PC games to sell, but it has been over 2 years. Wish me luck.

In the DOS version, it did have the boobs exposed and as she gets older she'll gain some carpet to match the drapes. So, in all likelihood, that may get removed too from the Steam edition.
