Huh, I decided to try that "Hell on the Earth" (yes, that's what it's called, I don't think the creator's first language is english) Doom 2 map 'remaster' thing thanks to that high-res crap anon. Under all the sweetfx bloom and stuff the maps look kind of interesting.
Trying it with Beautiful Doom, I actually quite like it. I'm a sucker for atmospheric stuff, and the dark, moody lighting pairs well with the brightmaps and heavy use of dynamic lights. I'm a bit iffy on the colored lighting on some places, and I don't really know if the level design changes are going to stay as subtle as they currently are, (in terms of actual changes to how they play, not just cosmetic things) but I quite like the novel usage of modern sourceport features. Like 3d water in certain areas. The area where you get the blue key in MAP02 is now almost completely flooded. Your head isn't submerged, but it's still up to your neck. It's the little things.
Pic is map03, since I forgot to take pictures beforehand. Turns out that you can actually subjectively improve how things look, at least to one's individual tastes, without making things look horrid to everyone.
