I already only use one controller for all of my games on the MiSTer and PC where possible using a Brook PlayStation to USB adapter. This sumbich has the most responsive and versatile layout ever. Only had to replace it once and can't remember the reason since I'm going ~6 years with the current one.

It ruined a generation of PS1 games.

>FPS games without proper look controls
>Platformers that force you to use L1/R1 to strafe the camera left or right or to rely on the "automatic camera"

Why couldn't SONY have been innovative and just done the Dualshock first?

The Playstation Controller. I feel that the analog sticks on the DS and DS2 are awkwardly placed. The vast majority of PS1 games also control perfectly fine with the D-Pad due to being explicitly designed for it. I also happen to only really care about the PS1's library.

Having grown up with the PAL version I never knew about this, pretty curious. I guess the idea was to double down on two "sets" of buttons (the original idea of setting them in two plates and the AB/XY labeling after all) even though developers would basically choose mappings based on their preferences anyway and button remapping options became normal on top of that.

The PS controller, in which the four buttons are laid out and labeled without preconceived relationships or hierarchy is the natural evolution of the original concept after being tested in practice I guess.

That came much later when Sony was playing catch-up to the N64's pioneering analog control. Their original controller was a joke... less modern than a SNES pad.

Ay /vr/, I'm looking for a PS1 game that I played a kid but have no idea what it was called.

It was a shmup, like Gradius or R-Type, except you controlled a submarine instead of a spaceship and some of the levels were vertical instead of horizontal. That's just about all I remember about it.

>contiguous D-Pad
why do people keep making it like that? it's really hard to find a good one with actual separate buttons that is not an overpriced Sony original.

This is what I use for emulation. Anything that requires analog I use a PS2 pad, the analog on PS1 is clunky as hell. On PS2 it still is compared to modern pads but less so than on PS1.
So I don't see the point of using a PS1 pad with analog, I don't use the analog so it's just extra useless weight on the controller.

If I cared so much about analog (I don't) I'd get a modern controller; but still use the non-analog PS1 pad for any emulation and PC game that doesn't require analog

I just ordered a convertor to use NES pads on PC for extra autism, I plan to use it for NES, GB and PC Engine

>those adapters are not very reliable either

I've been using those adaptors for 15 years, I've had at least 3-4 different models, and there is no issue whatsoever except the cable of the adaptor wearing down due to hanging from the weight after several years; but for 5 bucks I won't complain

whats the point of the select button? were there even playstation games that used it? seems like pretty dumb to have a "select" button when you can use the d-pad to select stuff anyway....

Its hilarious in its own right.
You put the sticks where the grip is suppose to end, instead of increasing the size of the grip. You then keep that abomination for the 2 next consoles, and partially for the 3rd next console.

Many folks say the d-pad is bad? What exactly is the problem with it? I've never had issue. To me it is one of the best around. What d-pad is equal to or better in your opinion?
