You get a filtered image. Depending on the monitor, resolution, and filter, it can look good or not. A lot of people will just do 480p with a scanline filter but I think it's better to do the highest resolution you can that's a multiple of 240p. So usually 960p, 1200p, or 1440p. 480p is fine if you're just doing a simple black line filter but if you want something that's more complex like crt-royale then you really ought to use a higher resolution. Just keep in mind the horizontal resolution of the game/console as well, not just vertical.
