I understand they can be good for encouraging certain behaviors in-game, but good game design can lead a player in various ways without the external, shallow, and low-effort checkboxes. They are the 'lateral gaming' equivalent of a mandatory tutorial screen before getting to control your character. So i concede they aren't always completely awful, at best they manage to be a surrogate for better game design and play-testing.
