same problem as botw.
marketing and word of mouth made it seem like the best game ever, but once you play it you discover it kinda sucked.
it legit made it seem like reviewers got paid to shill it and for everyone else it was their "first fps".

if anything halo really nailed it home that if a game REALLY popular, there's probably blatantly wrong with it to appeal to the masses. in this case 2 weapons only, slow/floatly movement, auto aim, regenerating health, poor ai and linear/repetitive level design.

Man, the gamefaqs polls used to be so great. I remember when they first did a popularity contest, back in 2000 or so when there haven't been a Mortal Kombat game for 3-4 years, and to everyone's surprise, Scorpion made it into the semifinals.

And of course when Bub and Bob, Einstein, and Launchpad from Ducktales dominated the Gamespot popularity contest so badly that they reversed the results so Mario or Link could still win. That was pre-gamergate too, and one of the things that made everyone realize in whose pockets the reviewers are.
