Also as other anons mentioned the game have some cryptic shit going on with the shards, specially the sun one which is found on a specific tile on a southeastern shrine.
I spends a whole month trying to get into Mother and Child Island on TLoZ:WW back when I didn't have internet in the mid 2000, so i can see myself exploring the whole DQ2 map with the flute to find the damn shard desu.

DQII is DQI in steroids, for better or for worst, simple mechanics and untested areas due to limited development time, heck is the only game Horii didn't finish before realease because they didn't have the time.
Always go with the remakes, in my humble opinion.
