95% of Japanese is kanji, so spend about a week or two mastering hiragana and katakana, then move onto learning basic grammar using Tae Kim's online guide. From there, you can play anything you want, as long as you're okay with relying on using jisho.org as a dictionary for the kanji. You could be playing Dragon Quest in Japanese in a month if you're really committed.
