I don't think they did it on purpose. You can get three keys and you can open more than three doors, and if you use a key on one of the doors before you're supposed to, you lose a key, and I've been posthumously told that there's a way to get another key by going to a later dungeon and grabbing one, but my younger brother had already deleted my save file and I don't want to play through the first half of the game just so I can get back to that hellhole.

Actually, same anon here, and I never did beat it. Got lost in the Water Temple and my save got deleted when I went to retry, so I haven't ever given it another shot. He sucks at some retro games but for some reason I suck at 3D Zelda while he was going through pretty quick.
