It would be better if they "forget" a lot about Super and try to focus on the core Metroid essentials. [Just] ONE of the problems with Fusion, ZM, and that other shitty non-retro game is that they looked too much to Super and were very much lacking in new and interesting ideas. It's clear that at that point the team was afraid to diverge too much from the formula, so instead you had lame permutations of it, each successively weaker than the source material (see: most of the post-SOTN Castlevanias - some good, most ok or worse).

A "New Metroid" (without the laziness implied in that label) would be a good start, by keeping the good elements of Super, while stripping out all of the fluff added since:
>storylines/cutscenes
>puzzles
>superfluous weapons and visors
>lack of difficulty

Difficult with the 30-energy starting thing and some of the consequences for falling into the wrong pit (those bubble rooms in Norfair, for example).

While on the whole I don't think it's overly-challenging, this is from the vantage point of having beaten it well over a dozen times. The game's enemies and environments can still pack a wallop if you're not careful.

Super is easy all-around, and far more forgiving - even in its boss battles (which are cool don't get me wrong). The one exception to me would be Ridley, who can be tricky due to the long trek to the boss-fight room and the lack of a real strategy for killing him quickly. Maybe Botwoon too due to the small hitbox.
