Most people probably use "waifu" as a joke

We didn't have that word for it back then, but at the time, I really thought of her as my romantic partner. I'd imagine conversations in my head with her, hold a pillow at night and pretend it was her etc. etc.

My previous relationship had ended amazingly shittily, and she kept me afloat. As sad and pathetic as it sounds, I feel like I only made it though that time because of her. I haven't thought about her this way in years now, and have since become a much more socially capable person, but I'll never forget what she did for me, and I'll always be grateful for it.

There was a time, ending about six years ago, that she was my ACTUAL waifu. I don't mean that I "really liked the character," I mean that I was using a mental idea of her to replace my need for human contact. I mean I wouldn't look at porn of her, and I would fall asleep at night hugging a pillow and imagining it was her. I mean I would have mental conversations with her.

This was mostly before the word waifu was in common use, but that's what she was.

LA was the first game that I ever owned that just belonged to me, and I was stuck on the second dungeon (You know the room) for years, so I would just spend time in the village hanging out with Marin and shit. She went from "older sister" in my mind to "romantic interest" after a particularly bad breakup in my late teens and I went full autist over her.
