>Capcom hired them to make two games that bombed hard. This put a huge burden in Treasure's shoulders.
Were the games panned in reviews? Or just bombed in sales? What I find weird is that they not only made one games but also the sequel, in a short span of time. Maybe the game wasn't a blockbuster hit, but it was successful in its particular niche (the japanese fans of the anime series the game was based on).
Even if the games bombed and Capcom lost money on it, Treasure probably got paid in advance for the development work, I'd assume.
Treasure still has some IPs they're sitting on that they could revive, such as Bangai-O. As far as I know, they are 100% the owners of it, and the games got a cult following. I think it's been like 10 years or more since Bangai O Missile Fury was released in XBLA and was never re-released.
A Bangai O deluxe package that contains the original N64, Dreamcast, NDS and XBLA games would be ideal and they don't really need to work that much, just port the games.
Instead they do the sporadical Ikaruga re-release every once in a while.
I think most of them are currently working at different companies, Treasure is like an independent collaborative that every once in a while get together and do something.
Personally I think their non-retro efforts are as valid as their retro ones, but the retro ones will forever be more iconic: Gunstar Heroes, Mischief Makers and Ikaruga are going to be immortalized as games people will keep recommending from Treasure for a long while.
And for those who want to dig more, the slightly lesser known games, but that hardcore fans claim are the best of the company, like RSG, Sin and Punishment, Alien Soldier will keep the Treasure legacy alive. Their weirder games such as Silhouette Mirage, Rakugaki Showtime and Light Crusader will also always have an even more niche following.
Yuyu Hakusho I'm sure was not a blockbuster but probably did alright for Sega between some sales in Japan and Brazil.

We should keep this retro though, but nah, I'd place Omega Factor much higher. Higher than SM at least for sure.

It's cool to know there's someone out there who actually hates Treasure.
Emotions are interesting, either positive or negative.

The Saturn version of Silhouette Mirage is actually pretty good.

Weekly treasure thread ahoy.

Can't wait to argue with the anti-treasurefags about game design and japanese developers.

Happy birthday to one of the vidya companies that gave me the most joy!

I just started playing Light Crusader, one of the few older Treasure titles I still hadn't played. So I guess it's my own way to celebrate their birthday.
I might be playing some Sin and Punishment or Bangai-O later today on the N64.

I got Spirits on release, way back when. I played it nonstop for a few days, but eventually got stuck. I should restart and finish it sometime.

Missile Fury, though, is superb. I got through all the main game and a couple bonus maps, but I'm stuck on the last like... 13 bonus stages. I want to 100% it already but it takes a lot of effort to go from zero to top-of-my-fuckin'-game to do that.

>definitely their most innovative game

Maybe, maybe. Even among titles like Alien Soldier and Mischief Makers, those games are "just" run and guns or "just" platformers. I've never seen another game like Bangai-O; it seems to defy genre. Baiting in tons of projectiles and retaliating at the last second to launch 400 missiles and destroy everything is pure bliss.

As I said earlier, the extent of my knowledge on it was limited to the back of the case. I had seen it every time I'd entered a certain game store over the course of what seemed like years and every time it drew my attention. Finally I decided to just buy it and see what it was about, and I felt like I had found the Ark of the Covenant or something, a completely unexpected, er, treasure!

I never thought about it as a kid, when I played it the most, but yes, the grinding is crazy. I did it anyway because I enjoyed squeezing every resource out of every enemy I could, but I can't ignore the fact that I only EVER played the game with Surosa/Sloth, specifically the level 6 one you can get right before the fight with Bug. Really need to hop on that Saturn version sometime.

Still, though, for as much as they botched the gameplay, I love that Working Designs localization. Those voice clips are forever burned into my brain.
