Why does everbody hate on Final Fantasy X? It's a game with a great story with touching moments. The Sphere Grid also helps to create a new, fun, and interactive way to level up characters. Tidus is also a very relate able character who hates his drunkard dad and adds a very human touch to the game.
FFX fares much better than some of the other games, too (I'm looking at you, VII and IX).
