Have you ever seen a rocket launcher with holes in it? Yes, even a rocket that is thrusting itself. A barrel with holes in it defeats the purpose of having a barrel.

You can have the same look with a heat shield. Which is where I think that whole confusion came from to begin with. These things do exist and they do serve a function. They just aren't holes drilled into the actual barrel.
