What's everyone's favorite crpg? It's one of my favorite styles of rpg so I'm curious what games people on /vr/ enjoy. My favorite is a tie between fallout 1 and 2.

>playing Fallout for the first time
>talk to Morpheus
>get taken directly to the Master
>convince Master to seppuku
>oh shit, a nuke is going off
>try to exit the building
>run into a closed off wall
>wait for an uncomfortably long time before one of the brothers walks by and opens the secret passageway
>gee, that was close
>get up the staircase back to the tower
>inside a room where the only exit is a locked door
>didn't get the key off Morpheus
>didn't invest in lockpicking skills
>can't just kick the door down like someone not in a video game would do
>sit there for the remaining 60 seconds before the nuke kills me

What are some other stories people have of getting fucked over by retro games because you missed something small? Also Fallout thread.

Obviously this. Savesumming to get hillarious dad jokes in dialogs barely passes as gameplay.

Thoughts?

No seriously, I’ve never seen anyone actually so much as mention the first game on 4chan

>playing fallout for the first time
>go to junktown, learn about gizmo and the skulz
>this would be good to talk to Killian about
>get more or less the same info from Killian
>stop talking to him, gu walks in, announces he's a rep of Gizmo, and starts shooting
>oh shit
>get my gun out to help, watch as others join the fight
>guy is dead, I helped some
>guards go back to post
>I talk to Killian expecting some reaction about this
>dialog options are the same
>ask him specifically about Gizmo and the Skulz, same text as before
>guards who fought alongside me warn me to holster my gun before walking back to same location and don't change behavior at all

What's that about /vr/? I thought that this game was supposed to be a well-thought out roleplaying experience. Yet some guy barrels in with a shotgun shooting to kill, and after he's dead there is zero change in behavior? I mean maybe it was silly of me to think that just because I wandered in and saw violence take place, that I somehow I should become his trusted individual to go check out the situation. I understand that, and clearly I was not taking the game seriously in that aspect. But even so, I expected SOME kind of response to what just took place beyond "ho-hum bad guy is dead, let's go back to our normal cycle even though our leader just took two shotgun blasts to his chest courtesy of the local seedy casino operator"

I've never been a big RPG guy, but I've completed this a couple of times and I like it a lot. What should I play that offers a similar experience?

>The game was purposely balanced so that, while the sidequests are optional to making the story progress, characters who did not improve their skills and experience by completing sidequests would be too weak to finish the game.[7]

Great "freedom" the game gives you. They sell it as a "you can do anything" game that if you don't like a quest just ignore it and quests have so many possible outcomes so you don't have to do them a certain way but it all boils down to the same thing, you're railroaded into doing them or you don't finish the game, simple as that. And while you're at it keep in mind the peaceful or stealthy solution gives you less exp than just going in and shooting everyone so that leaves you weaker too. For being such a great "role playing game" you sure are forced to play it how the devs wanted you to.

It's okay and the characters are fun, but it is deeply flawed.

What's your favorite CRPG, /vr/? I'm tempted to say mine is Fallout 1, but I'd have to think on that for a while.

Would work better as visual novel.

My new years resolution is to best my retro game backlog and that includes the original 2 Fallout games along with Tactics. We had a similar thread recently but I didn't write down all I needed prior to it being deleted from the archive.

How the hell am I supposed to play this game if I can't get power armor? If I tell a random guy to fuck off then I can't get radaway and I can't survive most encounters without powerarmor. How the fuck is this even fair? It's complete bullshit.
