GTA 3 is also playable from the top-down camera. I believe it was originally designed to played that way, but the technology was already advanced enough that they could just make it third person. When I first played GTA 3 I just couldn't grasp the idea of full 3D third person shooter and all my classmates thought I was crazy for playing it from that angle. I also remember only being able to compare GTA 3 to Tomb Raider because the genre was still taking its first baby steps.
